A drug rehabilitation and treatment facility certified to Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health standard
Under Royal Gazette Announcement No. 18 from Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, on the establishment of rehabilitation facilities, Day One Rehab Center passed the assessment as a certified rehabilitation facility (drug treatment center) at the committee meeting held on October 26, 2021.
Let’s walk through what it takes — the process and the components required — to become a certified rehabilitation facility (drug treatment center).
The Assessment Process

The rehabilitation facility (drug treatment center) must submit documentation — certificates and photographs — showing that it meets every requirement set by the Ministry of Public Health. The components required for certification are described later in this article.

A team from the Ministry of Public Health conducts an on-site inspection, checking that the facility and staff genuinely match what was submitted in the initial application.

The Ministry of Public Health notifies the facility of any items that need to be corrected to meet the required standard.

The rehabilitation facility (drug treatment center) must make the corrections requested by the Ministry of Public Health, and resubmit documentation once the improvements are complete.

The Ministry of Public Health brings the corrections back to committee for review. If all corrections are complete, the Ministry then grants the rehabilitation facility (drug treatment center) permission to open and begin treating people with addiction.
What It Takes to Become a Certified Rehabilitation Facility (Drug Treatment Center)
- Staff
· There must be an operator and advisors who are medical professionals trained and experienced in drug treatment. At Day One Rehab Center, our staff include psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists with long-standing expertise in drug treatment.
· There must be enough staff to properly care for everyone in treatment. At Day One Rehab Center, staff provide individualized care for each person in treatment, so that care is close and thorough.
- Treatment Curriculum
· There must be a treatment curriculum that meets international standards, with evidence supporting good treatment outcomes. Day One Rehab Center’s curriculum blends motivational work, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral therapy, and family therapy, providing education about quitting drugs — including Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Counseling, and Health Education.
- Activities
· There must be activities that promote physical health, mental health, and vocational skill-building, to develop the potential of each person in treatment. Day One Rehab Center has assembled a range of activities to support the health and quality of life of people in treatment, as follows:
- Facilities. The facilities used for rehabilitation and treatment must include the following:
· A building for rehabilitation and therapy activities
· A residential building for people in treatment
· A building for vocational training and occupational therapy
· Open, natural outdoor space for outdoor activities and exercise
· A secure perimeter fence, to prevent escape and to prevent drugs or illegal items from being brought into the facility
Day One Rehab Center has prepared all of these facilities, set within a shaded, natural lakeside environment across more than 30 rai (about 12 acres / 4.7 hectares), to give people in treatment the best possible environment for physical and mental recovery.
- Safety
· Safety in caring for people in treatment
Nursing staff monitor for signs of illness among people in treatment, keep basic medication and first-aid equipment on hand, and coordinate with nearby hospitals to transfer patients for treatment if a more serious physical illness arises.
· Safety in preventing escape
The facility must have a secure perimeter fence, scheduled staff watches, regular headcounts of patients throughout the day, and procedures for locating a patient if an escape occurs.
· Safety in preventing smuggled substances or illegal items from entering the facility
Our facility searches patient rooms and searches visitors before allowing them in, and limits who is permitted to visit.
· Other safety measures
This includes fire prevention — our facility has evacuation procedures in case of fire, along with firefighting measures — as well as accident prevention, guarding against falls or self-harm. Items within the facility must not include sharp objects, rope, fabric, or chemicals that could be used for self-harm.
As you can see, the process and requirements for obtaining a license to operate a rehabilitation facility (drug treatment center) are not simple, because drug treatment requires many different components working together.
