This model views addiction as arising from three overlapping factors:
- Biological — Substances such as ketamine, crystal meth, methamphetamine, cocaine, tramadol, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) act directly on the brain, causing it to become addicted to these substances to the point where behavior can no longer be controlled. For example, crystal meth stimulates the dopamine system so strongly that it produces an unnaturally intense feeling of pleasure, causing the brain to remember and crave it repeatedly, even while knowing the danger. For biological treatment, Day One’s psychiatrists assess withdrawal symptoms for each specific substance, since withdrawal presentations differ by substance, and use medication to manage withdrawal safely through detoxification. Patients are also assessed for any co-occurring psychiatric conditions, which are treated alongside addiction.
- Psychological (mind/behavior) — Many people who use drugs have underlying psychological conditions, such as:
- Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder
- Past trauma, or an upbringing that lacked understanding and support
- Feelings of low self-worth, loneliness, or stress from family or work
- Day One has clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, and specialized psychiatrists who provide counseling, analyze behavior, and treat the thought patterns that trigger relapse.
- Social (environment) — People with addiction are often part of a high-risk social environment, such as:
